A lifetime of Batman,
and a move that
couldn't wait.

Richard spent decades building one of the best vintage Batman runs I've seen. When he had to move away, it needed a home that would treat it right.

Some collections come with a story attached, and Richard's was one of the better ones. Decades of careful buying, a house full of memories, and a move that meant it was finally time to let it go.

Richard got in touch because he's moving away and simply couldn't take the collection with him. That's a situation I hear more often than you'd think, a life change forces a decision that's got nothing to do with the comics themselves, and everything to do with practicality. He wasn't looking to cash in on a hobby he'd fallen out of love with. He'd genuinely collected for a very long time, and it showed in every box.

Vintage Batman, done properly

The heart of the collection was vintage Batman and Detective Comics from the Neal Adams era, that late 60s into 70s stretch where Adams and Denny O'Neil dragged Batman out of the campy Silver Age and back into the shadows where he belonged. Moody, gothic, atmospheric covers, real noir energy on the page. It's one of the most important stretches in the character's whole history, and Richard had clearly been chasing it for years, not weeks.

Going through the boxes with him, it was obvious this wasn't a speculative pile bought for resale. This was a genuine, patient collection, built by someone who loved the character and the era. That's always the best kind to take on.

Where it ended up

Here's the honest bit. A fair chunk of this collection didn't go to Whatnot or eBay. It went straight into my own personal collection. That doesn't happen often, but when a run of Neal Adams-era Batman lands in front of you in that kind of condition, sometimes you keep it rather than move it on. Richard's decades of collecting are now sat on my own shelves, which feels like exactly the right ending for a collection like this.

If you're in a similar spot, moving on, downsizing, life just getting in the way of a collection you've loved, I'll treat it with the same respect Richard's got. No rush, no lowballing, just an honest conversation about where it goes next.
