Every few decades DC does something genuinely brave with its biggest characters. The Absolute Universe — launched in late 2024 under Scott Snyder's stewardship — is the bravest swing in years, and it's producing some of the best superhero comics on the shelf right now. If you've seen the word "Absolute" everywhere and wondered what it actually is, here's the honest explainer.
The premise: heroes with nothing
The Absolute Universe strips DC's icons of the advantages that usually define them, in a world quietly shaped by Darkseid. Absolute Batman is Bruce Wayne without the fortune — a working-class engineer from Crime Alley. Absolute Superman arrives on Earth with no Kents, no warm Kansas upbringing. Absolute Wonder Woman is raised in Hell rather than paradise. The question every book asks: what's actually left of the hero when you take away the safety net? The answer, consistently, is the best character work DC has published in years.
Why collectors care
Absolute Batman #1 became one of the best-selling comics of the decade, and the line's first appearances — new versions of major characters — are modern keys in the making. First prints of the early issues, particularly #1s and first appearances of Absolute takes on major villains, have already shown real aftermarket heat. It's the rare modern line where speculation and genuine quality point the same way.
Where it's going
The line keeps expanding — Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter and more have joined the original trinity, and the DC All In initiative ties the Absolute world into the mainline universe's future. I've been covering the individual books in depth (my Absolute Green Arrow breakdown goes issue by issue), and the consistent pattern is creators being given room to take real risks with characters that usually come bubble-wrapped.
Collecting it sensibly
First prints of #1s are the obvious plays, but print runs on the early Absolute books were large — condition and printing matter more than usual. Later first appearances in lower-print issues are where the sharper spec lives. And if you bought heavy at launch and want to move books on, that's a conversation I'm always up for.
