Not every pickup is about the comics. Some are about the two hours you spend afterwards, still stood on the doorstep, putting the world to rights over Zelda.
This one came from a fella just up the road in Stockton-on-Tees, a modest personal box, nothing enormous, but exactly the kind of collection I love picking up. Modern books, sharp covers, and a genuine passion behind every issue.
What was in the box
The collection leaned heavily into gaming variant covers, Venom issues alongside a run of Mario and Zelda-themed covers from Marvel's video game variant line. These have become a proper little corner of the modern collecting world in their own right, publishers pairing their characters with Nintendo icons in a way that shouldn't work as well as it does. Sharp, colourful, genuinely well designed books, and exactly the sort of thing that pulls in a different kind of collector to the usual key-issue chasers.
The bit that made the day
Here's the honest highlight though. The actual pickup took about twenty minutes. What came after took an hour longer than that, the pair of us stood there talking games, comparing notes on Zelda, going off on one about how good some of these variant artists actually are once you stop and look properly. That's the bit of this job nobody tells you about when you start, some of the best conversations you'll ever have happen over a cardboard box on someone's doorstep.
No pressure, no rushing off. Just a fair price, a decent chat, and a genuinely enjoyable afternoon. That's how every pickup should go.
