Why this one matters
Image printed a modest run of this because nobody expected a black and white zombie comic to run for nearly two hundred issues. Then the television series arrived and demand went vertical.
It is the clearest modern example of a comic that was scarce first and famous second, which is the order that creates lasting value.
What catches people out
- Printing, again. First printings carry the value. Second and third printings, and the many later reprints, are worth a small fraction. The cover colouring differs between printings, which helps.
- The market has cooled from its peak. Values spiked hard during the show's run and have settled since. Anyone quoting you a figure from 2021 is quoting a different market.
- Black cover, same problem as ASM #300. Dark covers show every handling mark, so condition assessment matters more than usual.
The honest verdict
A first printing remains a genuinely valuable modern comic. Later printings are pocket money. Check before you assume either way.
How to check yours
Search the exact issue on eBay and filter to sold listings rather than asking prices. An item sat unsold at a high price tells you what somebody hoped for, not what anybody paid. Match the printing, and be honest with yourself about condition, because it usually matters more than people expect.
