Why this one matters
This is the most valuable comic of the entire early 1990s, which makes it a genuine oddity. Almost everything else printed that year is worth very little, because the era was defined by enormous print runs bought as investments.
New Mutants #98 escaped that fate for one reason: nobody knew Deadpool would matter. It was an ordinary issue of a mid-tier title, read and bagged like any other, and then the character became one of the most bankable in Marvel's stable.
What catches people out
- Condition is unusually brutal here. Because so many copies exist, the market pays a steep premium for sharp ones and comparatively little for average copies. The gap between a well read copy and a certified high grade one is enormous.
- The 1990s paper problem. Comics from this era often show foxing and yellowing that is not obvious under a lamp. Check the edges in daylight.
- Facsimile editions. Marvel has reprinted this issue more than once. Facsimiles say so in the indicia and are worth a few pounds.
The honest verdict
Worth real money in high grade, noticeably less in average condition. Of all the comics on this site, this is the one where getting the condition right matters most before you set expectations.
How to check yours
Search the exact issue on eBay and filter to sold listings rather than asking prices. An item sat unsold at a high price tells you what somebody hoped for, not what anybody paid. Match the printing, and be honest with yourself about condition, because it usually matters more than people expect.
