Selling X-Men comics in the UK

X-Men is the collection I see most often from people who were teenagers in the eighties and nineties, and it is the one where the gap between what people think they have and what they actually have is widest. A box of 1991 X-Men #1 is common. A copy of Uncanny X-Men #101 or #129 in the same box is not. I know the difference, I price to what the books are selling for now, and I will tell you honestly which is which.

The X-Men books that carry the value

Nineties X-Men is where I have to be most honest. The 1991 X-Men #1 exists in five covers and sold in the millions. It is a lovely book and it is not rare. The same goes for most of the gimmick covers of that decade. I still buy them, in bulk, at a fair price for what they are.

What I actually look at

Condition and the Bronze Age. Uncanny X-Men from #94 to about #145 is the sweet spot, and condition matters enormously because these were read to pieces. A tight copy of #101 is a different object from a tired one.

Pence and newsstand copies. A lot of late seventies and early eighties Uncanny X-Men came into the UK with pence prices. Those have their own market, and here is how to tell what you have.

Reprints. Giant-Size X-Men #1 in particular has been reprinted and facsimiled repeatedly, and the wrong one is worth a fraction. I check the indicia, always.

Graded books. CGC and CBCS slabs are welcome. If you are thinking of grading before selling, read this first, because for most nineties X-Men it does not pay.
