The irony is that Bradford has real comics pedigree. Tula Lotay, one of the most decorated British comic artists of her generation, an Eisner winner several times over, studied at the University of Bradford, and she went on to found Thought Bubble, the festival that grew into the biggest comic art event in the country. The city has its own comics and manga weekend too, Bradford Comico, run as part of the Bradford Literature Festival at the university. And this is, after all, the world's first UNESCO City of Film, fresh from its year as UK City of Culture 2025, a city that has always taken visual storytelling seriously, right back to when the Wool Exchange made it the wool capital of the world. That building is a bookshop now, which feels about right.
