Selling a comic collection in the UK

Most collections I buy are not made of keys. They are a few good books, a lot of ordinary ones, and a decade of somebody's Wednesdays. The honest way to value that is to find the books that carry the money, price them properly against what they are selling for now, and then make a fair offer for everything else as a lot rather than pretending every issue is a treasure or that none of them are.

That is what I do. You send photos, I tell you which books matter, and you get one number for the whole collection. If you would rather keep the keys and sell the rest, that works too. I collect for free anywhere in the UK, I do the lifting, and I pay on the day.

What I am looking for in a collection

Silver and Bronze Age Marvel and DC, especially runs that were bought new and kept: Amazing Spider-Man, Uncanny X-Men, Batman, Detective, Avengers, Green Lantern

Keys hiding in runs. Most of the best books I have bought were in the middle of a longbox that the owner thought was ordinary

Complete runs in consistent condition, which sell better together than apart

Independent and Image: Spawn, The Walking Dead, Saga, TMNT, Invincible, especially early issues and first prints

Graded books, CGC or CBCS, in any quantity

Vertigo, Black Label and the big graphic novel lines, complete

UK and pence price copies, which are their own market and often undervalued by their owners

Inherited collections where nobody in the family knows what is there. I will tell you honestly, including if it is not much

Inherited collections and house clearances

A lot of what I buy comes from families who have inherited a collection and have no idea whether it is worth anything. The honest answer is usually somewhere in the middle: a handful of books worth real money and a lot that are worth a little. I will go through it properly rather than skimming for keys and leaving you with the rest, and I have written separately about selling an inherited collection, house clearances and probate valuations if any of those is your situation.

What is usually worth less than people hope

I would rather say this here. Most comics printed from about 1990 to 1996 were printed in enormous numbers, and a collection that is mostly nineties Marvel and DC is common however well it was kept. Reprints and facsimiles of keys are readers. Water damage, damp and missing pages take a lot off. Bagging and boarding preserves what you have but does not make it rarer. None of that stops me making an offer. It means the offer will be honest, and I will explain where the value actually is.

How to photograph a collection

You do not need to catalogue anything. A photo of each box with the spines showing, then a few of the best books you know about or the oldest looking ones, is enough for a first conversation. If there is a book you are curious about, a photo of the cover and the inside front page tells me most of what I need.

Questions people ask before selling

How many comics is too many or too few?

Neither exists. I have bought single keys and I have bought ten thousand DC comics from one house. Send photos and I will tell you what makes sense.

Will you cherry pick the keys and leave the rest?

No. If I make an offer on a collection it is for the collection. If you would rather sell only the keys, say so and I will price those instead.

How quickly can you collect?

Usually within days, depending on where you are. I cover the whole UK and I have driven a long way at short notice more than once.

Do I get paid on the day?

Yes. Once we have agreed a number and I have seen the books, payment is immediate.
