Newcastle's place in comics history is genuinely unlike anywhere else in the country. In December 1979, Chris Donald started putting a comic together in his bedroom in his parents' Jesmond house, roped in his brother Simon and a friend, and printed 150 copies of a 12-page issue that sold out in hours at the Gosforth Hotel. That comic was Viz. At its peak it was shifting over a million copies an issue, standing among the best-selling magazines in Britain while staying defiantly Geordie, and it is still going today. No other UK city has an origin story like that.
The connection runs deeper than the laughs, too. DC readers know Newcastle as the site of the "Newcastle Incident", the botched exorcism that haunts John Constantine through the whole of Hellblazer. The city's own creators include Al Davison, whose autobiographical graphic novel The Spiral Cage is a landmark of British comics, and Newcastle-born 2000 AD and Heavy Metal artist Angus McKie. And the scene is alive right now: the city's comic shops trade almost next door to each other on Grainger Street, Comic Con North East fills the Utilita Arena, and regular comic fairs run across the city.
