Right on my doorstep

Grimsby was once one of the busiest fishing ports on earth, hundreds of trawlers working out of the docks, and the Dock Tower still stands more than 300 feet over the town, modelled of all things on a bell tower in Siena. The smoked fish is protected by name the same way Champagne is, and Grimsby Town, confusingly, play their football just over the line in Cleethorpes. It is a proud working town with long memories, and Starrider has kept comics and sci fi going on Pasture Street for more than twenty years. Ports like this are full of collections that have sat in the same house for decades.

It is a fair haul around the Humber from Teesside, the best part of two and a half hours, but I will always talk it through by phone first.

How it works in Grimsby

1. Send photos. Covers and spines are enough to start. If it is a full collection, a photo of each box and a few close-ups of anything you think might matter.
2. I go through them properly. You get an itemised view rather than one number for everything, so you can see which comics carry the value and which do not.
3. You decide. No pressure, no obligation, and no hard feelings if you would rather sell elsewhere or keep them.
4. I collect and pay. Free collection, and payment on the day rather than when something eventually sells.

What I am looking for in Grimsby

Marvel and DC from the 1960s through to the 1990s, key first appearances, complete runs, independent titles and horror. I will also take the ordinary boxes alongside the good stuff, because leaving somebody with four boxes of comics nobody wants is not much of a service.

Why sell to me rather than a general dealer

Most house clearance firms and general second hand dealers price comics by the box, because they have no way to tell a valuable issue from a common one. That is fine for them and expensive for you. I read these, I sell them, and I know the difference between a first printing and a reprint, and between a newsstand copy and a direct edition.
