Right on my doorstep

Carlisle has been a frontier city for the best part of two thousand years, founded by the Romans as Luguvalium and later the largest fort on Hadrian's Wall, which ran just to the north of it. They call it the Great Border City for good reason: the castle has stood since 1092, Mary Queen of Scots was held prisoner inside it, and the Cursing Stone in the museum still carries a curse laid on the old Border Reivers. All that history means old houses and long settled families, and the city runs its own comic con now too. It is exactly the sort of place a real collection turns up in.

It is about an hour and fifty across the A66 from me, a road I know well, so Carlisle is a genuine day trip.

How it works in Carlisle

1. Send photos. Covers and spines are enough to start. If it is a full collection, a photo of each box and a few close-ups of anything you think might matter.
2. I go through them properly. You get an itemised view rather than one number for everything, so you can see which comics carry the value and which do not.
3. You decide. No pressure, no obligation, and no hard feelings if you would rather sell elsewhere or keep them.
4. I collect and pay. Free collection, and payment on the day rather than when something eventually sells.

What I am looking for in Carlisle

Marvel and DC from the 1960s through to the 1990s, key first appearances, complete runs, independent titles and horror. I will also take the ordinary boxes alongside the good stuff, because leaving somebody with four boxes of comics nobody wants is not much of a service.

Why sell to me rather than a general dealer

Most house clearance firms and general second hand dealers price comics by the box, because they have no way to tell a valuable issue from a common one. That is fine for them and expensive for you. I read these, I sell them, and I know the difference between a first printing and a reprint, and between a newsstand copy and a direct edition.
