Right on my doorstep
Penrith is the old red town, built from the local sandstone that gives its castle ruins and its streets their colour, a market town since Henry III granted its charter back in 1223. Richard the Third strengthened the castle here before he took the crown, the Beacon on the hill above town was lit in every war since the Tudors, and the place has long been the gateway to the northern Lakes with Ullswater just down the road. It is smaller than most towns on my list but no less worth the trip, and it even runs its own comic con. Quiet market towns are often where the best kept collections have been sitting undisturbed the longest.
Straight down the A66 from Teesside, only about an hour and a half, so Penrith is one of the easier runs over to Cumbria for me.
How it works in Penrith
- Send photos. Covers and spines are enough to start. If it is a full collection, a photo of each box and a few close-ups of anything you think might matter.
- I go through them properly. You get an itemised view rather than one number for everything, so you can see which comics carry the value and which do not.
- You decide. No pressure, no obligation, and no hard feelings if you would rather sell elsewhere or keep them.
- I collect and pay. Free collection, and payment on the day rather than when something eventually sells.
What I am looking for in Penrith
Marvel and DC from the 1960s through to the 1990s, key first appearances, complete runs, independent titles and horror. I will also take the ordinary boxes alongside the good stuff, because leaving somebody with four boxes of comics nobody wants is not much of a service.
Not sure whether yours are the ones that matter? The comic values section goes through the most commonly asked about issues, honestly.
Why sell to me rather than a general dealer
Most house clearance firms and general second hand dealers price comics by the box, because they have no way to tell a valuable issue from a common one. That is fine for them and expensive for you. I read these, I sell them, and I know the difference between a first printing and a reprint, and between a newsstand copy and a direct edition.
