A seaside town with a working past

Redcar is a seaside town with an industrial backbone, and the closure of the steelworks marked the end of an era that shaped families here for generations. That matters for comics more than it sounds: households that stayed in the same place for decades tend to have lofts that have never been properly cleared.

Some of the best collections I have bought came out of exactly that situation, a house being sorted after a lifetime, with boxes nobody has opened since the seventies. If that is where you are, take your time and get it looked at before anything goes to the tip.

How it works in Redcar

Redcar is a short drive from me, so collection is straightforward and usually same week.

1. Send photos. Covers and spines are enough to start. If it is a full collection, a photo of each box and a few close-ups of anything you think might matter.
2. I go through them properly. You get an itemised view rather than one number for everything, so you can see which comics carry the value and which do not.
3. You decide. No pressure, no obligation, and no hard feelings if you would rather sell elsewhere or keep them.
4. I collect and pay. Free collection, and payment on the day rather than when something eventually sells.

What I am looking for in Redcar

Marvel and DC from the 1960s through to the 1990s, key first appearances, complete runs, independent titles and horror. I will also take the ordinary boxes alongside the good stuff, because leaving somebody with four boxes of comics nobody wants is not much of a service.

Why sell to me rather than a general dealer

Most house clearance firms and general second hand dealers price comics by the box, because they have no way to tell a valuable issue from a common one. That is fine for them and expensive for you. I read these, I sell them, and I know the difference between a first printing and a reprint, and between a newsstand copy and a direct edition.
